BCRPA continues to facilitate the development of Fitness Leaders through two advanced designation offerings. These higher designations allow Fitness Leaders to take on larger roles in the fitness industry, contributing to the development of other fitness professionals.

Become a Teacher of Fitness Leaders (TFL)

TFLs are fitness professionals who have had relevant post-secondary education, as well as direct experience in the fitness industry and want to apply that experience and their knowledge to the education of future fitness professionals.  

TFLs are able to:

  • Perform ICE evaluations to verify the practical competence of new Fitness Leaders
  • Present workshops in their area(s) of expertise and grant BCRPA Continuing Education Credits (CECs)
  • Mentor future TFLs by allowing them to assist in conducting BCRPA-approved courses
  • Present courses in their area(s) of expertise and grant BCRPA specialty module completion status to candidates for BCRPA registration

Successful TFL Applicants will be required to take the next available BCRPA Train-the-Trainer Workshop or complete an equivalent Facilitator Training course.

Become a Supervisor of Fitness Leaders (SFL)

SFLs are generally fitness professionals who have responsibility for overseeing a team of Fitness Leaders. They are often Fitness Programmers or Managers at fitness facilities and are in a position to hire Fitness Leaders for their facilities.  

SFLs are able to:

  • Perform ICE evaluations to verify the practical competence of new Fitness Leaders
  • Present workshops in their area(s) of expertise and grant BCRPA CECs

Successful SFL Applicants will be required to take the next available BCRPA Supervisory Workshop or complete an equivalent Supervisory Training course. 


Supervisory Workshop

Upon application approval, you will be required to complete supervisor training. Courses offered by a variety of providers are accepted, including your local School Board, accredited post-secondary institutions, and the Justice Institute. The training should be a minimum of 8 hours.

Train-The-Trainer Workshops

Facilitation Training 

Upon application approval, you will be required to complete adult education/facilitation training. Courses offered by a variety of providers are accepted, including your local School Board, accredited post-secondary institutions and the Justice Institute. The training should be a minimum of 20 hours.

Note: If you have a degree/diploma/certificate in Adult Education, this requirement could be exempt.

Examples of Facilitation Training workshops accepted are: 


Instructor Competency Evaluation (ICE) Workshops 

The ICE Workshops are one of the requirements for all SFL and TFL application. They are designed to welcome new SFLs and TFLs by familiarizing them with the ICE procedures and the Fitness Program. 

Please submit a SFL or TFL application first. All successful applicants will be notified by email on how to enroll for this online workshop. 

ICE workshops are divided by specialties:

  • Weight Training ICE Workshop
  • Personal Training ICE Workshop
  • Group Fitness and Aquatic Fitness ICE Workshop
  • Yoga and Pilates Fitness ICE Workshop

Each ICE workshop contains knowledge on: BCRPA's Fitness Program, registration steps, ICE eligibility, ICE protocols, as well as evaluation tips and resources.

Upon completion of the ICE workshop, applicants will be required to arrange for a Shadow ICE, and the ICE Workshops provides a strong foundation to complete the Shadow ICE in each specialties.

ICE Workshops are $50 each and worth 1.5 CECs.
