Continuing Education Credits (CECs) are an industry standard to ensure that you are up-to-date with current practices in the fitness field. Proof of credits earned within your 1-year registration period is necessary in order to renew your BCRPA Fitness Registration and continue to be publicly listed on The Registry® of Fitness Professionals.
Please note:
- In-person and online workshops count toward professional development and are for CECs only – they do not qualify as a specialty module course
In this section you will find information about additional ways to earn CECs including:
External Courses and Workshops (not pre-approved by BCRPA)
If you have attended an educational training that wasn't pre-approved by BCRPA for CECs, you may still be able to receive credits by submitting a CEC Petition.
Approvals for CECs will be given to professional development training only. The purpose of the workshop/training must be focused on improving the professional quality of a fitness leader. The content of the training must also clearly reflect BCRPA's continuing education standards.
Trainings accepted through CEC Petition include:
-
Fitness teacher/instructor trainings
-
Post-secondary courses in fitness, nutrition, sport, or other related areas
-
Attending a fitness conference
-
Courses designed to improve your practice as a fitness leader
-
Business and marketing courses
-
Participating in a Shadow ICE, re-ICE or Osteofit Re-Certification (1.5 CECs)
-
Fitness related in-services or staff trainings
- Volunteering with BCRPA (eg. Conference Volunteer or Presenter)
Trainings that will not be accepted through CEC Petition include:
-
Self-study, or hours spent preparing to teach a course or writing an exam
-
Hours spent teaching/facilitating/instructing a course
-
Practicums, Internships, mentorships & teaching hours, writing exams
-
Master classes, unless associated with instructor training or other fitness certification
-
Training you have submitted a CEC petition for in the past, unless the content has been significantly altered
-
Emergency/Standard First Aid and CPR A & C training
-
Non-educational hours (eg. lunch breaks) during a course/workshop/conference etc.
-
Life coaching or other personal development workshop/training/course etc.
- Retreats, unless associated with instructor training or other fitness certification

Receiving Credits for Your Post-Secondary Education
Post-secondary (University/College) classes are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but in general 1 post-secondary Credit = 10 BCRPA CECs.
Please contact us at registration@bcrpa.bc.ca to have your post-secondary courses reviewed and approved.
Note: Course content needs to be relevant or beneficial in your work as a fitness leader such as fitness, nutrition, sport, or other related areas.
